Depending on who is speaking, a control room means a network supervision room, a security center, a crisis room mobilized a few days a year, or simply a space fitted with several displays. These environments are not always designed with the same equipment, however, nor with the same operating constraints. Here is what the term actually covers, and what sets these environments apart technically.&#13;\n&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/hi-technologies.ch\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Bloc-4-Led-Wall-Control-Room-Sharp-1.jpg\" alt=\"control room sharp led wall\" class=\"wp-image-3392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hi-technologies.ch\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Bloc-4-Led-Wall-Control-Room-Sharp-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/hi-technologies.ch\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Bloc-4-Led-Wall-Control-Room-Sharp-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-une-definition-qui-vient-d-une-norme-pas-du-marketing\">A definition that comes from a standard, not from marketing<\/h2>\n\n<p>The international reference is\u00a0<strong>ISO 11064, ergonomic design of control centres<\/strong>, published by the ISO ergonomics technical committee and issued in eight parts: design principles, arrangement of the control suite, control room layout, workstation dimensions, displays and controls, environmental requirements, evaluation, and sector-specific applications.<\/p>\n\n<p>Its immediate contribution is a precise vocabulary, where everyday usage mixes three different scales:&#13;\n&#13;\n<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The control room<\/strong>: the functional entity where operators are stationed to carry out centralized monitoring and control.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The control suite<\/strong>: the room together with the spaces that support it, equipment room, rest areas, associated offices, training room.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The control centre<\/strong>: all the rooms and local stations functionally linked on a single site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>\u00a0<br\/><br\/>The standard also introduces the notion of the\u00a0<em>off-workstation display<\/em>, in other words the shared video wall, and sets a clear requirement: the layout of the room must ensure that every shared display needed for the task remains visible from each relevant operator workstation. That single sentence constrains the layout of the entire room.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-noc-soc-salle-de-crise-memes-technologies-regimes-differents\">NOC, SOC, crisis room: same technologies, different regimes<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>NOC, Network Operations Center<\/strong>: supervision of networks and infrastructure. Permanent occupancy, a high density of technical sources per operator, and the need to switch quickly between machines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SOC, Security Operations Center<\/strong>: detection and handling of security incidents. The same occupancy constraints, with stricter requirements for visual screening and access control.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crisis room<\/strong>: used intermittently, it brings together decision-makers rather than operators. It has to move from idle to fully operational within minutes, and almost always includes videoconferencing for remote participants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Process supervision<\/strong>: manufacturing, energy, transport, healthcare, public services. The regime depends on the process being monitored, and the number of sources to be displayed simultaneously is the first sizing parameter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>\u00a0<br\/><br\/>These four profiles share the same family of equipment.\u00a0<strong>What changes is the duration of occupancy, the number of sources and the degree of redundancy expected<\/strong>, three parameters that drive most of the budget. A meeting room display does not withstand that regime.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Switching latency.<\/strong>\u00a0In real-time monitoring, the delay between source and display is a design criterion, not a comfort detail.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>KVM switching.<\/strong>\u00a0Driving several machines from a single workstation, without multiplying keyboards and mice, is a baseline expectation in supervision. It presupposes a source distribution architecture designed for that use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Redundancy.<\/strong>\u00a0Duplicated power supplies, controllers and distribution paths, so that the failure of one component does not cut off the overall view.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maintenance without interruption.<\/strong>\u00a0Front access to LED modules allows work to be carried out without dismantling the structure or stopping supervision. It is a design choice, settled when the wall is laid out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Workstation ergonomics.<\/strong>\u00a0Consoles, heights, viewing angles and seating layout are covered by dedicated parts of the standard, and determine how teams hold up over long shifts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>\u00a0<br\/><br\/>To which the standard adds layout rules it states explicitly: entrances must not fall within the operators&#8217; working visual field nor behind them, and workstations must not face windows, unless the outside view is itself a source of information.\u00a0<strong>These constraints are handled on the drawings, not after the building is delivered.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-le-mur-d-images-deux-technologies-deux-logiques\">The video wall: two technologies, two logics<\/h2>\n\n<p>The video wall is the most visible element of a control room, and the one the decision arrives on earliest.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The LED wall<\/strong>\u00a0offers a continuous surface with no seams, high brightness that holds up in semi-open spaces, fully customizable ratios and front-access maintenance. The pixel pitch is chosen according to how far away the operators sit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The LCD video wall<\/strong>\u00a0with ultra-narrow bezels remains a reference for large detailed display surfaces, in modular configurations, with high resolution and a more accessible budget.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>\u00a0<br\/><br\/>The deciding criterion is neither the brand nor the diagonal, but the\u00a0<strong>operators&#8217; viewing distance measured against the density of information displayed<\/strong>. A control room falls under analytical viewing as defined by the AVIXA DISCAS standard, a regime markedly more demanding than that of a meeting room: we set out that calculation in our article on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hi-technologies.ch\/en\/what-screen-size-for-your-meeting-room\/\">the right screen size for a room<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u00a0<br\/><br\/>That leaves the layer that makes the whole thing work: the source management and distribution platform, which centralizes the streams, handles access rights, organizes visual scenarios and provides KVM switching. This is the role of ecosystems such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hi-technologies.ch\/en\/partner-brands\/barco-control\/\">Barco CTRL<\/a>, designed for critical environments and permanent availability.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ce-que-l-etude-de-conception-arrete\">What the design study settles<\/h2>\n\n<p>\u00a0<br\/><br\/>Every project begins with a sizing study carried out by our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hi-technologies.ch\/en\/audiovisual-expertise\/in-house-engineering-office\/\">in-house engineering office<\/a>. It settles the points that cannot be recovered later:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the number of sources to be displayed simultaneously and their nature,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the distance from operators to the video wall and the pixel pitch retained,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the choice between an LED wall and an LCD wall,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the layout of workstations, the consoles and the operator furniture,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the supporting structure, the loads and the building constraints,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the physical environment of the room, lighting, thermal conditions and acoustics, which the standard treats on the same footing as the equipment,&#13;\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>room for growth: the standard retains\u00a0<strong>around 25 % additional workstations and equipment<\/strong>\u00a0as a prudent allowance, based on practical experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>\u00a0<br\/><br\/>That last line is worth defending at investment committee.\u00a0<strong>A control room sized to the bare minimum becomes constraining as soon as the scope is first extended<\/strong>, whereas the margin costs little at the design stage.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-concevoir-integrer-maintenir\">Design, integrate, maintain<\/h2>\n\n<p>\u00a0<br\/><br\/>A supervision room is judged over time.
